I run a 450 sow piggery in Victoria and am wondering whether or not my land can be certified organic in the future. The effluent is pumped onto the paddocks from a holding dam. The piggery is not organic and I don't plan to make it organic in the future.

ACO response – you could apply for part property certification initially so that the piggery is not included as part of the certified area, although you need a long term plan of how you will convert the whole farm to organic. Regarding the effluent, the use of non-organic effluent is allowed however must meet the requirements set out in section 4.3.12 and Annex 1 of the ACOS. For more information call one of ACO's certifying officers on 07 3350 5716.
