What is the Australian Organic Market Report (AOMR)?

The AOMR provides comprehensive data and figures on the value
and production of the Australian domestic organic market every
two years.

The inaugural AOMR was published in 2008 in a landmark event which saw the Australian organic industry gain access to the first available local research and sector data since 2004.

Independently researched by the University of New England’s Organic Research Group, and commissioned by the Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA), the AOMR has received funding support from Horticulture Australia Ltd (HAL) for three years from 2010. The report is based on industry-wide survey data and builds upon research published by the Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) in 2004.

Australian Organic Market Report 2010

2010 marks the second release of the AOMR, launched at Organic Expo in August 2010.

The AOMR 2010 once again provides the organic industry with a benchmark for the growth of the organic industry. The report showcases a continued and rapid development of the industry on the back of the 2008 report, which highlighted an 80 per cent increase in farm-gate sales from 2004. With much attention given to the growth of the organic industry (including an IBISWorld report that predicted the organic market would experience the second largest growth rate of any sector in Australia in 2010) investors, industry members, government and other stakeholder groups have begun putting the data contained in the report to use.

The report features up-to-date data on value and production, including details on farm gate value by sector. It provides retail, import and export values, and highlights demographic information for organic stakeholders and consumers.

The AOMR provides organic operators with direction for the coming two years, and is a crucial benchmark for industry, government and media.

The Australian Organic Market Report (AOMR) 2008 is a landmark report for the organic industry, delivering consistent data for benchmarking growth across the various sectors of the industry. AOMR is a key tool for decision making by organic producers and marketers, along with interested parties such as government and media, in assisting in understanding the nature, size and development of the organic industry in Australia.

Supply chain development has been hindered over many years by a lack of basic information about volumes, seasonality, continuity and quality, not only making it difficult for potentially new members of industry to feel confident about investing in organic, however also likely to cause overseas buyers to look for other countries with more comprehensive industry information.

The report is an important base research document required by any growing industry. The report is commissioned by Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA) and  independently carried out by the University of New England’s Organic Research Group. The AOMR has the financial support of major sponsor Westpac Bank, all State Governments in Australia as well as many dedicated industry businesses.Like to read the Australian Organic Market Report 2008?

Read key findings from the AOMR 2008 below:

•  Retail value (incorporating imports and adjusting for exports) was estimated at above $0.5B. Retail value reached over $600million with reports of between 10 and 30%+ growth per annum for some sectors since the last report in 2004.

•  2007 farm gate values were estimated to be in excess of $231,000,000 – an 80% increase on the 2004 DAFF research findings.

•  Australia accounts for the largest amount of certified organic farmland in the world, the majority of which is used for extensive grazing.

•  The number of certified organic operators has increased by an annual 5.2% average net over the last 5 years, during a time of ongoing decrease in overall farmer numbers in Australia.

•  Despite widespread drought, farm gate sales have risen by over 80% as an average across all sectors since last reported in 2004. Grains and broadacre livestock were most impacted by drought, effectively decreasing the reported average for industry overall.

•  40% of consumers now buy organic food at least on occasion.
