Organic wine and food is produced without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and artificial fertilizers on the farm, i.e. from biologically active organic soils.
Many wine makers and grape producers use organic and biodynamic production and processing methods to produce a pure, distinctive and full flavoured product representative of their local region, and untainted by synthetic chemical inputs.
Organic wine is… Sustainable
Did you know scientists in Italy found a bottle of wine from an organic farm can have half the eco-footprint of non-organic wines because differences in production and packaging methods?
Organic wine is… Low in synthetic chemical inputs and additives
Did you know an organic bottle of wine is created without the use of over 100 chemical regulators, insecticides, fungicides and herbicides which can be used ito produce non-organic wine?
Organic wine… Tastes great!
There are many award winning organic wines increasingly recognised for their unique and region specific flavours
Organic wine… Is affordable
There is often little to no price difference between many organic and non-organic wines
Organic wine… Is natural
Like organic food, organic wine is guaranteed to contain no genetically modified (GM) ingredients
Did you know… organic and biodynamic farming has been used to produce wine in counties like France, famous for its wine varities, for many decades.
Organic Advantages
Using organic farming methods in the growing of grape vines enables:
Elimination of the use of synthetic chemicals (fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides) which can be toxic and harmful to the environment
Farms to emphasise sustainable and environmentally friendly production methods. Organic farming focuses on the natural development of organic material and life (humus) in soils (whereas non-organic farming focuses on synthetic chemical applications that destroy soil microbes and living matter).
Vines to be sustained by the natural fertility of the soil, rather than by over fertilising with synthetic soluble chemicals. Plants develop stronger cell walls which provides a natural defence against disease.
Improved health of product for consumption. Wines to be produced with flavours that are more representative of where they are grown (terroir).
Reduced use of irrigation. Overall increase in good bugs/bacteria in the ecosystem which naturally defend the plant against predators (insects and mould).
