"Can Do" Series, Pam Pittaway

Seeds:
Q:  Can I use conventional seed if I do not find any certified organic seed available?

A: Permission in writing must be obtained from the Certification Office prior to use of all untreated and treated non-organic seeds and propagative materials.  You can do this by completing the Non-Organic Seed Request Form which you may request by calling the ACO office on 07 3350 5716.
Where seeds have been treated, removal of prohibited substances is required prior to planting.  Wash water must be disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner, and records should be maintained.  However, this is only allowed where no untreated sources are available commercially or where treatment is mandated by state government regulations.

Some country or regulatory requirements may permit only organically produced seed and propagative material. Onus is on the operator to ensure compliance to
additional market requirements.

GMO products and GE processes are prohibited in all aspects of organic production systems and products. This includes prohibition of GE seeds and rootstock material treatments such as NOGALL.

Please note that industry circumstances have recently been re-reviewed and this allowance for use of non-organic seed has been extended until June 2011.
